International Women's Day: Accelerate Action Debate

International Women’s Day (IWD) is more than just a celebration, it’s a call to action. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” underscored the urgency of driving real change for gender equality in technology, media, and beyond.

Leaders at 24i and Amino took this opportunity to host an engaging panel discussion featuring inspiring women who are reshaping the landscape of their industries. Moderated by Clare Bramley and Veronica López, the conversation brought together a powerhouse panel:

Emily Morley – Marketing Consultant at Amino

Ana Pinedo – Developer at 24i

Ana Rodriguez – Senior Product Owner at 24i

Naomi Ingram – Group Financial Controller

Aurora Brown – Representing the next generation of women in tech

Breaking Barriers in the Workplace

The discussion kicked off with a critical question: What holds women back from leadership roles?

Emily Morley highlighted two major obstacles: the lack of female mentors and unclear career progression paths. Women often struggle to envision themselves in leadership when they don’t see female role models leading the way. Naomi Ingram, a finance leader in a traditionally male-dominated industry, echoed this sentiment, adding that mentorship and confidence-building are essential to overcoming imposter syndrome.

The Gender Gap in STEM Education

From the classroom to the workplace, gender biases in STEM fields persist. Ana Pinedo shared her experience as a Computer Engineering student, where only 15-20% of her peers were women, a statistic that has barely improved over the years.

Aurora Brown, currently studying Robotics, highlighted the subtle but pervasive bias she encounters. “There were times when my ideas were ignored, until a male colleague said the same thing and received praise.” The solution? Leaders must actively ensure all voices are heard, she emphasized.

Work-Life Balance & The Motherhood Penalty

Ana Rodriguez reinforced the importance of structural changes, equal parental leave, flexible work policies, and redefining career growth beyond traditional promotions. Naomi Ingram opened up about the motherhood penalty, sharing how career breaks for maternity leave impacted her trajectory compared to male colleagues.

Her advice to women? Take opportunities even if you don’t feel 100% ready. Research shows that women hesitate to apply for roles unless they meet all criteria, whereas men apply with just 60% of the qualifications. Confidence and visibility matter.

A Call to Action: Pushing for Change

The panel concluded with a powerful reminder from Grace Hopper, a pioneering computer scientist and U.S. Navy rear admiral, who was first quoted in 1976:"The most dangerous phrase in the language is: ‘We have always done it this way.’"

At 24i and Amino, we’re committed to challenging norms, advocating for equity, and supporting the next generation of women in tech. Change happens when conversations turn into action. What will you do to accelerate action for gender equality?
